The UAE residence visa process, step by step

Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping — with realistic timings and the parts that go wrong.

Updated

The residence visa is what turns a UAE company from a piece of paper into a basis for living there. Here is the actual sequence.

Before anything: the establishment card

The company needs an establishment card — sometimes called an immigration card — before it can sponsor anyone. This is a company-level registration with the immigration authority, costs roughly AED 1,800 to 2,800, and renews annually. Nothing visa-related starts until it exists.

Step one: entry permit

The free zone applies for an entry permit on the company's behalf. If you are outside the UAE, you enter on it. If you are already inside on a tourist visa, some zones allow an in-country status change for an additional fee, which saves a flight.

Typical time: three to ten working days.

Step two: medical examination

A blood test and chest X-ray at an approved government centre, screening for communicable diseases. You must be physically present. Express processing is available at most centres for an extra fee and returns results in around 24 hours rather than three to five days.

Step three: Emirates ID biometrics

Fingerprints and photograph at an ICP centre. Again, physically present. The card itself arrives by courier later, but the biometric capture is what unblocks the next step.

Step four: visa stamping

The residence visa is issued electronically and linked to your passport. Most UAE residence visas run two years for free zone employees, with longer options including the ten-year Golden Visa for those who qualify.

Realistic total

Two to six weeks from entry permit to stamped visa, assuming documents are clean and you are available for the in-person steps. Budget one trip of five to ten days to cover the medical and biometrics comfortably.

What goes wrong

Attestation is the most common delay. Degree certificates and marriage certificates used for dependant sponsorship often need legalisation in the country of issue and at the UAE embassy there — a process that can take weeks and cannot be started from Dubai.

Name mismatches between passport and supporting documents cause rejections. So do passports with under six months validity.

Certain nationalities are subject to extended security clearance, which can add weeks and is not predictable from outside. If that applies to you, you should be told before you pay, not after.

Dependants

Sponsoring a spouse or children requires a minimum salary threshold on your own visa, attested marriage and birth certificates, and suitable accommodation evidence. Plan the attestations before you leave your home country — this is the single most avoidable delay in the whole process.
