Before you decide

What to know before choosing

Three points, set out clearly from the start, that decide how well a UAE company suits you.

Tax residence

If you keep living in London or Lagos and run the business from there, your home tax authority will treat the company as resident at home. Incorporation changes registration, not residence. Living in the UAE and managing the company from there is what can change the picture.

What the first year really costs

The headline figures published by the authorities cover the licence alone. They exclude the establishment card, visa, medical, Emirates ID and corporate tax registration. First year with one visa: from AED 20,000, up to AED 35,000, depending on the zone and configuration selected. See the study of 16 zones.

Corporate tax

Since 2023 the UAE has corporate tax. Free zone companies can reach 0% on qualifying income, provided they have adequate substance. Registration is mandatory either way.

Procedure

The four-stage process

  1. A twenty-minute callWe establish where you live, where the work happens and where the money comes from. So you only go ahead if the UAE genuinely fits.
  2. Zone selection and written quoteA firm price, in writing, with the free zone named and every fee listed. 1–3 days.
  3. Licence and visaLicence in 1–5 working days, or 24 hours on the express route. Visa steps (entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping) take 2–6 weeks and require you to be in the UAE.
  4. Banking and ongoing complianceWe prepare the bank file and follow it up; opening takes 4–12 weeks and the final decision is the bank's. Then corporate tax registration, accounting and annual renewal.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does opening a company in Dubai mean I stop paying tax at home?

No. This is the most common and costly misunderstanding about Dubai companies. Incorporating a company in the UAE changes where that company is registered — it does not change your personal tax residence, and it does not by itself move your company's tax residence either. If you continue living in France, Belgium, the UK or South Africa and manage the business from there, your home tax authority will generally treat the company as tax resident at home under place-of-effective-management rules, and will tax you personally as a resident. To change your tax position you have to change where you actually live and where the business is genuinely run. The company is one step in that, not a substitute for it.

Do I need to live in the UAE to keep a free zone company?

No — you can own and renew a UAE free zone company while living anywhere, and many people do. But owning a company and being UAE tax resident are different things. A residence visa alone does not make you tax resident either. The UAE issues tax residency certificates against defined physical-presence and housing criteria, and your home country applies its own separate test. Plenty of people hold a UAE company and a UAE visa while remaining fully taxable at home, because they never changed where they actually live.

Is a UAE free zone company really taxed at 0%?

Sometimes, and conditionally. The UAE introduced corporate tax in 2023. Mainland companies pay 0% on profits up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that. Free zone companies can access a 0% rate, but only on income that meets the 'qualifying income' definition and only if the company meets adequate substance requirements in the UAE — real people, real premises, real activity. A free zone company whose income falls outside that definition pays 9%. Registration for corporate tax is mandatory for every company regardless of expected rate, and the filing obligation applies even when the result is zero. Descriptions of UAE free zones as simply 'tax-free' reflect pre-2023 rules.

How long does it actually take?

The licence is the fast part: one to five working days in most free zones, sometimes less; with Meydan's Fawri express route, an eligible applicant can have the licence issued within 24 hours. The realistic timeline is driven by everything after the licence. The residence visa chain — entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping — typically runs two to six weeks. The bank account is the real variable and routinely takes four to twelve weeks, sometimes longer, and no provider can guarantee it. Certain nationalities face extended security screening that adds weeks. Plan for six to twelve weeks end to end, and be cautious of promises such as 'your company and bank account in 48 hours': they usually cover the first step only.

Can you guarantee I will get a bank account?

No, and neither can anyone else. The bank's compliance department decides, independently of your company formation agent, based on your nationality, your source of funds, your business activity and your free zone. We can prepare the file properly, introduce you to banks that have historically accepted similar profiles, and tell you before you start whether your profile is likely to struggle. We will not imply a guarantee we cannot give, and we advise caution with any provider that promises a UAE bank account.

What is the difference between a free zone, mainland and offshore company?

A free zone company is registered with one of the UAE's economic zones, allows 100% foreign ownership, can sponsor residence visas, and can obtain a tax residency certificate — but cannot sell directly into the UAE local market without a distributor or branch. A mainland company is licensed by the emirate's economic department, can trade anywhere in the UAE including government contracts, and now also allows full foreign ownership for most activities. An offshore company — RAK ICC, JAFZA Offshore, Ajman Offshore — is a non-resident holding vehicle: no visas, no UAE trading, no tax residency certificate. If your goal involves residency or tax residence, offshore is not the right product, as it is not a route to either.

How much does it cost in total?

For a single-person service company with one residence visa and no physical office, a realistic all-in first year lands between roughly AED 20,000 and AED 35,000 depending on the free zone. Add a second visa, a customs code or a real office and it rises quickly. The figures advertised as 'from AED 5,750' are licence-only, exclude the establishment card, visa, medical, Emirates ID and corporate tax registration, so they are not the full price. Our calculator shows a range with every line itemised, including the ones most providers leave out until invoicing.

Do I have to fly to the UAE?

For the licence alone, often no — many free zones allow fully remote incorporation. For a residence visa, yes: the medical examination and Emirates ID biometrics must be done in person in the UAE. Most banks also now require an in-person meeting for account opening. In practice, if you want the visa and the bank account, budget for one trip of roughly five to ten days, and expect that it may not all complete in a single visit.
